J, K and everything else

So we brougtht her home and took T-F off from school for maternity leave. All she does is eat and sleep and make diapers. Jessica took some days to recover, definitely the slowest recovery of the 4 but there are 3 here. Let's seee, Tuesday yes before she was 48 hours we were chauffeured to Ladies' Bible Studay and picked up by Grandma DJ who had tiny newborn clothes because Haddie's so small. Wednesday we went to library. Thursday we satyed HOME! and Friday we ventured to co-op where friends held her. Apparently a brand new baby can make a big sister the center of the social scene for 5-9 year-olds. Then pair our three-year-old wooer with the babyand i's worse than a man taking a cute puppy to the beach. In the 10-13 age range Jessica couldn't tell who got more "Aww"s, the baby or the little man holding the baby. He's dangerous! Friday from co-op having made many many moms nervous Jess did what she could, everyone came in the door stripped their clothes off, put them in the hamper and got in the shower or tub as the case may be. Hadassah loved her bath. So did everyone else, but you'd think after 3 Jess would know to bring the diaper IN with us. She left a towel present and we bathed all over again. Haddie gets curls when her hair is wet tight little shell curls. Saturday we went to kid's workshop at Home Depot. Sunday she was at church and made her first trip to the altar. Monday she had her one week check up and weighed in at her discharge weight of 7 lbs but she measured a 1/4" shorter. Don't know why. We worked on getting to know Hadassah and loving Hadassah and admiring her and holding her and Caleb ran rampant with the camera. Rebekah started raking leaves and that first baby week got a pile as big as our pool table. We were very thankful for outside play weather that first week. The boppy is a huge hit. Any will fetch it when needed. Caleb got a special treat just being in the right place at the right time. The hospital said taking her clothes off might wake her up and Hadassah really had to start waking up Friday. She was SO pleasant and wide-eyed. So Jessica totok pictures of her and Caleb and Caleb took pictures of Mama and Hadassah. A hours later Elijah tried it too. That night Hadassah was welcomed into being a Shullenbarger sibling, she was invited to be the top of the pig pile. Can't really explain it but they pile on each other something fierce so slowly Rebekah got down on the floor and Elijah climbed on then Caleb but then they switched the boys for so Rebekah could be more comfortable and we put Hadassah on top. They were thrilled!

Elijah started nursery school at BHS in Mrs Lenzo's class Tuesday. Students at the high school are responsible for planning lessons, snacks and activities for the 3 turning 4-year-old crew. This semester's theme is Safari. Chris had taken off work and was able to attend the "meet and greet" session on Elijah's first day. He was so excited and went into the class happy and confident.

Hadassah was born on November 1 at 401 pm. Our day started out like an abnormal Sunday anyway. Since it was the first Sunday of the month our church holds combined service during second service hours. We have been visiting Sovereign Grace of Frederick on those Sundays. Getting to "sleep in" Jessica woke up at 730 and started thinking about getting ready. At 750 she clocked the first contraction since there had been other prior. At 830 they had been running every 5 minutes like clockwork. We had to leave at 915 and they were still stuck in 5 minute segments. We dropped somethings off at Faith then headed down to Tuscarora HS. By 945 they were fluctuating between 3 and 5 minutes so we called the doctor just before going into service. The kids got checked in, we walked into the auditorium to find a seat, checked the phone and had a missed call. We left worship without sitting down and the doctor called back and told us to come on in. Jessica offered to get the boys while Chris got Rebekah but she took two steps down the hall and decided maybe sitting and waiting would be a better idea. Loaded up and ready to go we arrived at FHM around 11 and Jess was hooked up by 1130. Before the nurse put the IV in she made the nurse answer if we would be going home with a baby. The resulting check of 4 cm brought a positive answer. The proper calls were placed and a plan formed. The penicillin drip was started at 1 needing to last until 2. Jessica actually got to do that walking thing the show women doing in L & D from 2 to 3 and then more fluids came on the IV. Everyone got fed. Jaci brought in Subway for the kids and Chris. Jess got a good fluid lunch from FMH. Chris' parents and sister arrived. Doctor Lee broke the water at 325. Jessica seriously considered the epidural 3 contractions and 10 minutes later. Bless her heart, Jessica's nurse Erika, got the doctor pretty much ASAP and she gave the FASTEST side effects lecture to date. She really felt it wouldn't kick in time. The check came in at 9 cm. The bed was broken down, the kids and Jill sent for, andthe doctor called. Kids in, doctor sitting and the wonderful words push when you'd like came. 3 pushes later Hadassah was with us. Once cleaned everyone got to hold Hadassah and "admire" her. Chris saw everyone out and crossed paths with Jessica just in time to take the camera and follow Hadassah to the nursery for more weighing and a bath. She liked the water just like the rest of them. There feet picture and finger pictures and a hat, Redskins color though they may they conveniently double as Brunswick Railroaders. Jessica and Hadassah were able to be discharged after 24 hours and our family was complete.

We went trick-or-treating at Chris' parents'. We covered more ground this year escorted by Pah and Aunt Tillie. Theme for our second candy gathering enterprise was The Justice League. We had appearance by Hawkgirl, The Flash, and Batman. Superman and Wonderman were otherwise detained, rumor has it that Wonder Woman was super pregnant with Superman's child and couldn't fit into her uniform.

All items were from around the house. I suppose the Batman pj could count as cheating but they were handme downs....Thanks Jack, Coy and Erik! Jess got a run for her creative money as Rebekah assured her ALL week that she had the pieces of her costume together...green pants, orange shirt. Turns out Hawkgirl wears a yellow shirt, green pants, red undies and boots and has a mask and wings. UGH! Thanks to Chris for making the mask and wings out of the card board from Hadassah's dresser (see below)--both equally awesome. We cut a non descript, unused-as- of-yet boy shirt down to make the top, Elijah donated his underwear and sweatpants for her bottoms and Wonder Woman let Hawkgirl borrow her boots since she had no need for them at the moment. Caleb wore EA's sweatpants, Captain Hook's turtleneck and a winter cap knitted by Mimmom. Chris made the insignia and ear pieces. Jessica covered a belt with the scraps from Hawkgirl's shirt and snow boots with yellow plastic bags. Facepaint was done with Jessica's new FAVORITE facepaint recipe--see Yoda from last week. Having fussed ALL OVER Hawkgirl and The Flash, Elijah declared he needed a mask and facepaint too. Chris made the mask, Jess covered it in black. We sat around checking candy and tasting it for a long time.

Jessica's belly finally showed itself on week 37. Saturday there was no belly. Sunday there was a noticeable belly. We realized we adn't taken many belly pictures. One of our favorites from Caleb's pregnancy is a picture of Rebekah trying to bounce on Mama's belly.

We took the time to let the kids fuss over the belly and they enjoyed themselves.
Caleb (in love with the new camera) took the pictures of Chris and Jessica. We thought he did a good job.

One goal of our Pittsburgh trip (besides trunk-or-treating--Luke is irresistable) was to shop at IKEA. The kids dressers and toy storage are from there. We got theirs summer before this one on the way home from the Shore. Our closest IKEA is in College Park. Not wanting to make a special trip this made perfect sense because we pass the IKEA up there. Paula was kind enough to shuttle Jessica up there. Chris and Elijah put it together that Sunday.

J week saw to making 3-layered jello and jumping. The kids worked hard on their pumpkin art projects (pictures to follow). For the library they made their pumpkin into their favorite literary character. Rebekah made Odie because her pumpkin was taller. Caleb made Garfield because his pumpkin was fatter. Elijah made Hedgie from the Jan Brett books. They've been on display at the library. J week Bible verse was "Jesus said, 'I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life...'" K week was "Keep my commandments." with kisses and koalas and kangaroos.
