Our little man

Elijah loves Hadassah but he enjoyed being the baby before she came. Jessica, Rebekah, Elijah and Hadassah all got strep throat 3 weeks ago. It was BAD. A week later Elijah came down with a rash that started on the bottoms of his feet and on his ankles. By night time it was on his tummy. By morning it was on his chest moving towards his neck. Caleb was voting for poison ivy with a little too much interest. Rebekah and Chris and were voting for chicken pox. Jessica was starting to think slap cheek. We made a doctor's appointment that morning when his feet were so marked, red, and itchy he couldn't walk proper. Nurse guess the pox. Doc finally said he was a textbook case of allergy to the -cillin family of antibiotics. Right, he'd been on amoxicilin for EIGHT days. He's miserable! "Put him on Claratin," she said. "He's been on Claratin for 2 months for allergies." "Oh, that's why his reaction is so delayed and mild," the doctor said. "Mild?" "Yes, Ma'am. He's not having any trouble breathing at all." "Uh, great, but he's very uncomfortable." (while itchy breakout has crept up his ears looking to get to the top of the scalp. ) "Give him some benadryl and rest it out." We bought the Benadryl and within 15 minutes watched the rash retreat in the same manner it had attacked, leaving his ears and finally vanishing from the bottoms of his feet.

I broke out in a "typical" amoxicillin rash in February or March after having taken it for decades with no problem. According to my doctor, one of the hallmark signs of the reaction is that it breaks out, on average, once you've been on the medication for 7-10 days. It was the most horrid rash I have ever had in my life. Not just itchy, but burning too! Blech! Glad he's on the mend now!!!

They tell me it doesn't necessarily mean I've developed an allergy to the -cillins, but since both my sister and mom are allergic, I don't think I'll be taking any chances. Especially not if it could mean getting that rash again! Ack!
