Staying in Appleturkey checking out Petroglyph National Park

See there are two rocks. On the left one
the two spikes on the top are Rebekah and
Caleb.
Like many other national parks, more than one area is included in Petroglyph National Park. Here there was a canyon to hike and on a separate site volcanoes. The canyon hike was "easy"--flat and not strenuous. What happened though was it was HOT. We had hats and a cranky Haddie who FINALLY fell asleep in the carrier. We found we were very thankful for many things. Chris spotted a new kind of wildlife to our family after MANY lizards: Desert Hares, two bobbing and weaving with long ears and racing stripes. (We're crazy about hares [and moles, badgers, owls, hedgehogs, and squirrels]). Chris and Jessica were thankful for kids that found this stuff adventurous and fun. We were thankful for Haddie's carrier--yard sale buy, shout out to Grandma DJ! The kids were thankful for sneakers that covered their feet in the sand even if they collected quite a bit of sand. Most importantly we were thankful for the 6 gallon water container that Chris purchased before we left on our trip. After the 45 minute hike in the blistering sun and empty water bottles with 200 meters to go, we could fill up with fairly insulated, mostly cold water! AHHHHHH! So that gave us energy and hope to head off to lunch at the volcanoes. We selected to hike the smaller one in "scramble mode", straight up not the winding path.
