We made it to the VLA. It does have a name as opposed to what Jessica files it as "that place with the big dishes from Contact." The Very Large Array is not near a canyon as the show in the movie but it is in New Mexico. There are 27 dishes, 9 on each of the 3 prongs. It was so quiet. there were always people working there who you hardly ever see and it's just totally open to the public to wander around. It's a hard science area. The dishes are big. We got to see a dish itself move and adjust to new coordinates. The bases are set on railways to allow them to be configured. Everyone had fun looking at them. The visitors center was filled with wonderful information about how they work and what the goal of the array is.
