Close encounters of the natural kind

Our absolute best wildlife encounters came in the most unexpected place....the VLA. When searching for things to do Jessica had thrown out "those big dishes from Contact". Chris liked it and we didn't think we could swing it on the way (too far south) and then we thought we would go below it and finally it became a viable option. WOW! We saw wonderful skies, some kind of well endowed antlered deer, two little skunks greeted us at the front door (the video is so cute!), both kinds of rabbits (cottontailed and desert hare), stink bugs, pretty flowers, birds, and uh cows. They were so comfortable around us, maybe not the stink bug. They weren't like the ground squirrels at Grand Canyon Park approaching us and expecting food.
They were used to people being around and probably leaving them along for the most part. When we arrived at the visitor's center after oooo-ing and ahhhh-ing over ALL the RABBITS, Jessica gave a warning that it looked like there was a dead skunk on the sidewalk (ew!). Chris observed that it was not dead and not one but two and they were moving. We ended the drive with the cows who were changing pastures for the night. It took awhile to leave. Our destination was Socorro. We saw this light in the sky. We were pretty sure we'd already seen the sun set. It took about 1/2 an hour to go...."It's the moon!" This is what it became.
